A joyous birthday celebration tragically turned into a scene of violence, claiming the life of 25-year-old Kayla Winfrey, a Black/African American woman, in Chicago's Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the night of April 11, 2026. Winfrey was celebrating her own 25th birthday with friends and family outside a residence on South Morgan Street when the fatal shooting occurred.
The evening's festivities, attended by approximately 30 to 40 guests, took a dark turn when a dispute erupted between
two groups of women at the party. The argument reportedly moved to the front porch of the home. During the altercation, a woman allegedly called for a man to come to the location. A man, described as a 26-year-old from the Washington Heights area, arrived at the scene in a silver or gray vehicle.
Around 11:45 p.m., the man opened fire on the gathering. Winfrey was struck by multiple gunshots to her body. She was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead less than an hour later from a gunshot wound to the chest. A 36-year-old man from Matteson was also wounded in the shooting, sustaining gunshot wounds to his abdomen and right calf; he was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in fair condition.
The suspected shooter fled the scene in the same silver sedan and, as of the latest reports, remains at large. No arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and the investigation by Calumet Area detectives is ongoing. Friends and family remember Kayla Winfrey as a kind, intelligent, and generous person who had previously worked as an EMT and was a dedicated youth mentor with Chicago's SGA Youth and Family Services. Loved ones gathered to mourn her sudden and violent death, calling for justice in a case that has left a community in shock.
