Carl Chambers, a 46-year-old man from Marlboro, New York, died after a burst of gunfire shattered a Sunday evening soccer gathering in Poughkeepsie on April 19, 2026. The shooting happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. near Stitzel Field on Lincoln Avenue, across from where a local adult soccer game was taking place at Eastman Park. What had been an ordinary community sports event quickly turned chaotic when multiple 911 calls and a Raven gunshot detection alert sent police rushing to the area.
When officers arrived, they found a large crowd still in the area and began piecing together what had happened. Investigators said several people had been exchanging gunfire across the street from the soccer field. Early evidence suggested that at least three different firearms were used, including a high-powered rifle. Chambers was struck during the shooting and was taken to Vassar Brothers Medical Center in a private vehicle before police got to the scene. He was later pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Another person was also wounded in the same incident. Authorities said a 31-year-old man later arrived at MidHudson Regional Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg, and police believed he had been shot at the park during the same exchange of gunfire. His condition was reported as stable. Police also interviewed the people who transported Chambers to the hospital, along with other individuals connected to the scene, as detectives worked to determine who fired the fatal shot and how the violence began.
As of the latest available reports, no arrests had been announced in Chambers’ killing. Police had not publicly named any suspect or suspects, and officials said multiple people believed to have been involved in the shooting had not yet been located. Poughkeepsie Police Chief Richard Wilson described the situation as fluid and said investigators were still trying to determine whether the people who were shot were victims, participants, or both. Authorities continued asking witnesses and anyone with information or video from the area to contact the Poughkeepsie Police Department as the homicide investigation remained open.
