Marcus Clay, a 50-year-old man from Canton, was shot and killed on April 22, 2026, after an argument unfolded inside a Jackson liquor store. The shooting happened around midday at Hot Shot Liquor, Wine & Spirits, also identified in reports as Liquor Wine and Spirits, on Northside Drive near the I-55 frontage road in Jackson, Mississippi. Capitol Police were called to the business at about 12:20 to 12:23 p.m. after reports of gunfire.
According to employees, two customers began arguing near the register. The confrontation quickly escalated, and one of the customers pulled out a gun and shot Clay. When officers arrived, Clay was found dead at the scene. A cashier who witnessed the shooting was not physically injured, but employees said he was taken to a hospital because he was in shock after seeing the violence unfold so close to him.
The shooting left people at and around the store shaken. Workers later cleaned up the aftermath while bystanders struggled to understand how an argument inside a business could turn deadly so quickly. One Jackson resident who spoke with local media said the violence made no sense and urged people to put down guns and be more aware of their surroundings, noting that even with police often present in the area, violence can erupt in seconds.
Capitol Police arrested 59-year-old Henry Brown shortly after the shooting. Brown was charged with murder in connection with Clay’s death. Available reports identify Brown as the suspect in the fatal shooting, and no additional suspects were publicly named in the sources reviewed. Police continued asking anyone with information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers as the case remained under investigation.
