In the early morning hours of March 31, 2026, the life of 33-year-old Eugene McNeal was tragically cut short on a sidewalk in South Memphis, Tennessee. He was discovered outside a residence near the intersection of St. Paul and Boyd shortly after 1:30 a.m., having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Medical assistance was rendered, but McNeal was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident left the community shaken and searching for answers.
The investigation into McNeal's death quickly gained momentum as law enforcement utilized surveillance and cellphone footage from the area. This video evidence proved to be a critical component of the case, revealing a dark Nissan Altima pulling up in front of the house where McNeal was located. Several males were seen exiting the vehicle and approaching McNeal on the sidewalk just before the fatal gunshots rang out. Investigators were able to trace the Nissan Altima to the grandfather of Okorie Deshun Thomas.
Days later, on April 7, a significant breakthrough occurred in the case with the arrest of 29-year-old Okorie Deshun Thomas. He was taken into custody as he was getting into the same Nissan Altima seen in the surveillance footage. Thomas has since been charged with second-degree murder and tampering with evidence in connection with Eugene McNeal's death. During questioning, Thomas allegedly told investigators that he had handed a gun to an individual he knew as "Lil Blood" following the shooting, and that several males had fled the scene. Authorities have noted that Thomas has a prior conviction for aggravated assault from 2025. He is currently being held in Shelby County as the case proceeds through the legal system. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to seek information from the public regarding the other individuals involved in the incident.
