In the late afternoon hours of Thursday, April 2, 2026, a dispute over a moving truck rental in northeast Austin escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 39-year-old William Rogers. The incident, which is being investigated as Austin's 17th homicide of the year, unfolded at a Penske Rental Truck facility located at 8201 Tuscany Way.
Rogers, a Black male, was at the location with two acquaintances and fellow movers, one of whom has been identified as 28-year-old Javarus Crumpton.
The men had gathered to rent a truck when an argument erupted concerning the cost of the rental deposit. The disagreement intensified, tragically culminating in Crumpton allegedly shooting Rogers. Austin Police Department officers responded to a "Shoot/Stab Hotshot" call at approximately 5:42 p.m. and discovered Rogers on the ground with visible gunshot wounds. First responders rendered medical aid until Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services arrived and transported him to a local hospital. Despite their efforts, William Rogers was pronounced deceased at 6:52 p.m.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Crumpton and the third individual present remained at the scene and have been cooperating with the ongoing investigation led by homicide detectives. As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. The Austin Police Department has informed the Travis County District Attorney's office about the incident, and the investigation remains active. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Austin Police Department or submit anonymous tips through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
