In the early morning hours of April 2, 2026, the sounds of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn stillness on Latham Avenue in Plymouth, North Carolina. Multiple 911 calls flooded the local dispatch, with one caller reporting a shooting at 110 Latham Avenue. When police arrived at approximately 1:30 a.m., they discovered a tragic scene in the driveway of the residence. A vehicle sat parked with three occupants inside, two of whom had sustained gunshot wounds.
Inside the car, officers found 36-year-old Devonelle Brimage unresponsive. He had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene by Washington County EMS. In the backseat, authorities located 38-year-old Avione Linquad Webb, who was also suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Miraculously, an 8-month-old infant was also present in the vehicle.
Both Webb and the infant were immediately transported to Washington Regional Medical Center for treatment. The baby's injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening, and the child has since been released. Webb, however, required further medical attention and was later transferred to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville.
Family members have shared a heart-wrenching account of Brimage's final moments. They believe that in his last act, the father of eleven shielded his 8-month-old child from the barrage of bullets, a testament to his love and selflessness.
As of the latest available reports, the Plymouth Police Department is actively investigating the case as a homicide. They are being assisted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Washington County Sheriff's Office. To date, no arrests have been announced, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or a possible motive in the shooting.
