On the evening of Monday, April 6, 2026, a burst of violence on Walden Avenue in Buffalo, New York, claimed the life of 21-year-old Jihad Gibbs. The young man was discovered with injuries in the 200 block of the street at approximately 9:30 p.m. by responding Buffalo Police officers. He was quickly transported to Erie County Medical Center for treatment, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led police to a suspect,
22-year-old Angel Gonzalez-Rondon of Cheektowaga. In the early hours of the following morning, around 12:52 a.m., officers spotted Gonzalez-Rondon driving near Broadway and Bailey Avenue. When they attempted to pull him over, he allegedly sped away, leading them on a high-speed chase that ended on Harlem Road in West Seneca. There, he reportedly attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody.
Prosecutors from the Erie County District Attorney's Office have since charged Gonzalez-Rondon with murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, alleging he fatally shot Gibbs with an illegal gun. His arraignment also included a list of other charges stemming from the police pursuit: reckless endangerment in the second degree, unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree, reckless driving, and seven vehicle and traffic law violations. Gonzalez-Rondon is being held without bail and faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison if convicted of the murder charge. The investigation into the death of Jihad Gibbs is ongoing, and detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward.
