In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Buffalo, New York, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of 21-year-old Jorge Garcia-Leon. On February 12, 2023, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Garcia-Leon was inside a nightclub on the 100 block of Michigan Avenue when a dispute escalated into a fatal shooting. He was pronounced dead at the scene, a victim of multiple gunshots.
Two other men, aged 49 and 59, were also wounded in the incident but survived.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify Sharief R. McBroom, then 20 years old, as the gunman. It was determined that McBroom had managed to bring an illegal handgun into the nightclub. Following a minor altercation, he opened fire, killing Garcia-Leon and injuring the two other patrons. U.S. Marshals and the Buffalo Police Department apprehended McBroom, and in April 2023, he was arraigned on an indictment that included charges of Murder in the Second Degree, two counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.
In July 2024, Sharief R. McBroom, then 21, pleaded guilty to all charges against him. The prosecution offered no reduced plea, emphasizing the violent and senseless nature of the crime. That October, McBroom was sentenced to 22 years to life in prison. Following the criminal proceedings, the sister of Jorge Garcia-Leon filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the nightclub, alleging negligence in allowing the firearm onto the premises. Garcia-Leon was remembered by his family as a loving father to his daughter, Ava, and his untimely death left a profound impact on his loved ones.
