On the afternoon of April 10, 2026, Richard Carter, a 49-year-old male from Valley Stream, was fatally shot in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York. The incident occurred around 2:21 p.m. at the intersection of Merrick Boulevard and Sayres Avenue, just outside The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York. Carter was in attendance at a funeral service at the cathedral when he was attacked.

the ground with several gunshot wounds to his torso. Emergency services were called to the scene, and he was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
