In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Queens, the vibrant life of 28-year-old Twayne Summers was tragically cut short. On January 19, 2019, the Brooklyn man was behind the wheel of his black Hyundai Sonata, driving away from the Angels Nightclub on College Point Boulevard. It was around 4 a.m. when another vehicle pulled alongside his near Ulmer Street and the Whitestone Expressway, and the night erupted in gunfire.
Summers was struck in the head in the drive-by shooting.
A 37-year-old man sitting in the front passenger seat was also hit, suffering a wound to his back. A third man in the back seat was fortunate to escape unharmed. First responders rushed Summers to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe. He succumbed to them the following day, on January 20, 2019. The other victim was reported to be in stable condition.
The police investigation pointed to a dispute that had occurred earlier inside the nightclub as the likely catalyst for the violence. It is believed that Summers and his friends had an argument with another group of men who then followed them from the club and carried out the fatal attack. The incident was unsettlingly similar to another fatal shooting that had taken place in the same area just a few months prior, also following a confrontation at the same nightclub.
Despite the ongoing investigation by the 109th Precinct, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Twayne Summers. The individuals responsible for the shooting remain at large, and the case remains unsolved, leaving a grieving family and community still searching for justice for the dedicated father of two.
