In a tragic turn of events stemming from a bitter custody dispute, a Queens man ended the lives of his young son, his ex-wife, and his current wife before taking his own. On the evening of July 30, 2018, the bodies of 39-year-old James Shields, a male physical therapist, his 6-year-old son Giacomo James Shields, his ex-wife Linda Olthof, 47, and his wife Saskia Shields, 38, were discovered in their Astoria apartment. Police were called to the scene at approximately 9 p.m.
after neighbors reported hearing gunshots.
Investigators believe that Shields was the sole perpetrator in the horrific murder-suicide. Evidence suggests that a contentious and emotionally draining custody battle over his son was the primary motive behind the killings. Olthof and their son were living in the Netherlands and were in New York for a court-ordered visit. It is thought that the prospect of their return to the Netherlands may have been the catalyst for Shields' actions. He had previously set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for his legal fees, where he expressed his anguish and financial strain related to the custody arrangements.
Upon their arrival, law enforcement officials found a grim scene. All four individuals had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. Shields was found to have also inflicted a self-inflicted knife wound. Two legally owned Glock handguns and seven fully loaded magazines were recovered from the apartment, indicating a level of premeditation. A note was also found at the scene in which Shields reportedly wrote, 'I had a perfect life, and now it's all screwed up.'
The investigation concluded that James Shields was the lone actor in this devastating event. As he took his own life after committing the murders, there were no arrests made or suspects sought in connection with the case. The incident left the local community in shock and highlighted the tragic potential of escalating domestic and custody conflicts.
