On the evening of Friday, April 10, 2026, a dispute in the parking lot of an East Austin nightclub tragically cut short the life of 29-year-old Richard Zachary Barr. The Black male, known affectionately as "DJ Zee," was a proud native of Austin's south side, remembered by loved ones for his caring and loving nature. He was a devoted son, friend, and uncle who was excitedly anticipating the birth of his own child.
That night, at approximately 8:40 p.m., Austin Police officers were
dispatched to the Cabana Club at 5012 East 7th Street following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Richard Barr with apparent gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Homicide detectives determined that a physical altercation in the parking lot escalated, leading to the deadly shooting. Investigators reported that Barr was moving away from the conflict when he was shot in the back. Two other individuals were also wounded in the incident; one was transported to the hospital in critical condition, while the other was treated and released. This case marked the 20th homicide in Austin for the year 2026.
In connection with the shooting, authorities arrested 21-year-old Ryan Lara, a Black male. He has since been charged with Murder, a first-degree felony. The investigation revealed a conflicting account from the owner of a local gun store, who claimed Lara and another employee were attacked by a large group and acted in self-defense. However, the Austin Police Department has not confirmed this version of events and their investigation remains active.
