In an apparent robbery that turned fatal, 28-year-old Kevonte Javon Smith of Pontiac, Michigan, was shot and killed on the afternoon of Saturday, April 11, 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. in the 100 block of Crystal Lake Drive, where deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office found Smith lying in a driveway with a gunshot wound to his back. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses reported that the suspect fled the area on foot after the shooting.
A swift and intensive search for the suspect was launched by law enforcement, utilizing a K-9 unit and drones to scour the surrounding area. This effort led to the arrest of a suspect approximately three hours after the shooting at a location on Spokane Drive in Pontiac. Along with the arrest, detectives successfully recovered the weapon and clothing believed to have been used during the commission of the crime. Investigators have indicated that the victim and the suspect were acquainted with each other.
The suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Jonathan Mack, also of Pontiac. Mack has a criminal history that includes a 2016 conviction for unarmed robbery for which he served prison time, and he was on probation for a drug conviction at the time of the incident. He was arraigned at the 50th District Court and is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, possessing a firearm by a prohibited person, discharging a firearm in or at a building, carrying a concealed weapon, and three counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony. A conviction for first-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Mack was denied bond and remains in custody. A probable cause conference is scheduled for later in April, with a preliminary examination set for early May.
