On the day he went missing, Serna's family had left for work early in the morning. When they returned at approximately 6 PM, they found the front door locked. Inside, a partially eaten banana was on the kitchen table, and all of Serna's personal belongings, including his glasses, Bible, suitcase, and clothing, were still in his room. The family initiated a search, contacting local hospitals to no avail.
Serna was known for his daily walks and could cover up to 10 miles in a day, often to pay utility bills or visit the barbershop. He also had a history of walking away, though he was usually found near Adams and Magnolia streets. It was also noted that he typically carried about $300 in cash. After Serna's disappearance, police conducted searches in the fields near the Howard Johnson's restaurant but found no trace of him.
In the time following his disappearance, Serna's family placed a newspaper advertisement seeking information. This led to a couple of potential sightings. A woman reported seeing an elderly man matching Serna's description hitchhiking on December 3, 1979, near Arlington and Streeter. Another individual reported seeing a man with a cane who resembled Serna on December 7, 1979, near Van Buren. Despite these leads, Marcelino Crisogono Serna has never been heard from again, and few details are available in his case.
