In the early morning hours of Sunday, March 1, 2026, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a Marshalltown, Iowa neighborhood. Inside a residence on North 11th Avenue, a shooting incident unfolded, leaving four people injured. One of the victims, 33-year-old Gage Duane Gersema of Mount Pleasant, was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries from the gunfire.
Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his wounds, his death marking a tragic end to a life described as adventurous and full of heart. Gersema, a father of two, was remembered for his love of the outdoors and spending time with his family.
The Marshalltown Police Department, along with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, promptly launched a thorough investigation into the fatal shooting. Investigators worked to piece together the events that led to the violence, assuring the public that the incident did not appear to be a random act. As they processed the scene and interviewed witnesses, authorities appealed to the community for any information that might lead to further understanding of the case. In an effort to generate leads, the Marshall County Crime Stoppers offered a $1,000 reward for information that would result in additional arrests.
In connection with the deadly event, authorities arrested 29-year-old Allen James Hart, also of Mount Pleasant. Following his arrest, Hart was charged with several serious offenses, including intimidation with a dangerous weapon with intent, a Class C felony, as well as reckless use of a firearm resulting in injury and reckless use of a firearm resulting in property damage. Hart was subsequently booked into the Marshall County Jail on a $25,000 cash bond as the investigation into the death of Gage Gersema continued. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for the days following his arrest, marking the first step in the legal proceedings of the case.
