Malcolm Toney, a 32-year-old male, was fatally shot on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at the Tangi Village Apartments in Hammond, Louisiana. The incident unfolded from a physical altercation involving the suspect and Toney's brother.
According to reports from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, 21-year-old Tyrell Brister was allegedly in the process of assaulting Malcolm Toney's brother. As the altercation escalated, Brister was reportedly leaving the scene.
At this point, Toney approached the vehicle Brister was in and was subsequently shot. Emergency services were called to the apartment complex, and Toney was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation led by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office quickly identified Tyrell Brister as the primary suspect in the shooting. He was arrested and booked on multiple charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, home invasion, and second-degree battery. A second individual, 39-year-old Monica Haynes, also known as Monica Sims, was identified as an accomplice. She was taken into custody and faced charges of accessory after the fact to second-degree murder.
Following the arrests, the legal process against both individuals began. Tyrell Brister faced charges that could lead to a significant prison sentence if convicted of second-degree murder. The charges against Monica Haynes suggested that she allegedly assisted Brister after the commission of the crime. The community was left to mourn the loss of Malcolm Toney, with funeral services being held for him in early May 2024. The case against Brister and Haynes is proceeding through the Tangipahoa Parish judicial system.
