In the early morning hours of March 15, 2020, a gathering at a home on West Linn Street in Marshalltown, Iowa, took a tragic turn, ending the life of 27-year-old Blake Thomas, a Black / African American male. The night, which had been filled with the sounds of a party, descended into a fatal confrontation fueled by what was described as "trash talking." An argument erupted between Blake Thomas and another man, Mustafa Muhammad, which then spilled outside.
It was there, at approximately 3:30 a.m., that the verbal dispute escalated to deadly violence. Muhammad drew a handgun and fired multiple times, striking Thomas. Despite efforts to save him, Blake Thomas succumbed to six gunshot wounds and died at UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown.
The investigation into Blake Thomas's death quickly led authorities to Mustafa Muhammad. Initially, the identity of the shooter was not immediately clear, but investigators pieced together evidence that pointed to Muhammad. During an interview with detectives, Muhammad's story changed; after first claiming he tried to de-escalate the situation, he admitted to shooting at Thomas multiple times. The murder weapon was later discovered in a neighbor's grill, and Muhammad's palm print was found on it. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and reckless use of a firearm.
Mustafa Muhammad pleaded not guilty, and his case went to trial. His defense argued that he acted in self-defense, claiming that Blake Thomas and his brother, Robert, were threatening, armed, and on drugs. The defense contended that Thomas had asked, "Who is ready to die tonight?" and reached for his waistband before Muhammad fired. However, the prosecution presented a different narrative, stating that Thomas was unarmed and had only been "trash talking." No evidence was presented to show that Thomas was armed at the time of his death, and a toxicology report showed only alcohol in his system. In October 2021, a jury found Mustafa Muhammad guilty of first-degree murder and reckless use of a firearm. The tragic death of Blake Thomas also set off a devastating chain of events, as his brother, Robert J. Thomas, seeking retribution, committed a separate murder just 10 days later, for which he was also convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
