On a quiet Sunday afternoon in Humboldt, Kansas, a domestic disturbance escalated into a tragedy that ended the life of 43-year-old John P. Kent. The events of March 8, 2026, unfolded when a woman, reportedly fleeing a dispute with her boyfriend, sought refuge at a neighbor's home on Sycamore Street. That neighbor then contacted Mr. Kent for assistance.
Upon his arrival, a verbal altercation ensued between Kent and the woman's boyfriend, identified as 25-year-old Malachi I.
Davis, also of Humboldt. The confrontation took a fatal turn when Davis, from his vehicle, fired a single shot that struck Kent in the chest. Emergency services were called to the 1000 block of Sycamore Street around 5:10 p.m. Kent was rushed to Allen County Regional Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, Davis fled the scene, prompting a search by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Humboldt Police Department, the Allen County Sheriff's Office, and the Kansas Highway Patrol. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was requested to lead the investigation. At approximately 8:40 p.m. that same evening, Davis was located and apprehended by the Kansas Highway Patrol during a traffic stop near La Harpe.
Malachi Davis was taken into custody and booked into the Allen County Jail. He has since been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of John P. Kent. Davis made his first court appearance to hear the charges brought against him. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
