On the evening of March 8, 2026, Corporal Timothy O'Connor, a 40-year-old male, was on duty in Chester County, Pennsylvania. A 15-year veteran of the Pennsylvania State Police, he was assigned to the Troop J, Embreeville Station. The night took a tragic turn when a report came in about an erratic driver in the vicinity of Walnut and Compass Roads in Honey Brook Township. Corporal O'Connor located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Route 10 and Michael Road in West Caln Township at approximately 8:24 p.m. He radioed in the stop, a standard procedure that would tragically be his last communication.
As Corporal O'Connor approached the driver's side of the vehicle, the driver, identified as 32-year-old Jesse Nathan Elks of Honey Brook, immediately opened fire from inside the car. Struck by the gunfire, Corporal O'Connor was fatally wounded. After shooting the corporal, Elks exited his vehicle, walked a short distance, and then fatally shot himself with a semi-automatic pistol. He was pronounced dead at the scene. When Corporal O'Connor did not respond to subsequent radio calls, fellow officers were dispatched to check on his welfare and discovered the tragic scene.
Corporal O'Connor was rushed to Paoli Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide by the Pennsylvania State Police Troop J Major Case Team and the Chester County District Attorney's Office. While authorities have identified the shooter, the motive for his violent actions remains under investigation as they delve into his background. Corporal O'Connor, the 105th member of the Pennsylvania State Police to be killed in the line of duty, is survived by his wife and daughter.
