On Halloween night, October 31, 1974, 17-year-old Laura Ann Aime, a white female, vanished after leaving a party in Lehi, Utah. She had been staying with various friends at the time and left the gathering alone shortly after midnight, intending to hitchhike. This was the last time she was seen alive. Because she often stayed with friends for extended periods, her family did not immediately realize she was missing.
Their concern grew when she failed to show up for a planned hunting trip with her father.
Nearly a month later, on November 27, 1974, hikers discovered Aime's nude body in American Fork Canyon. An autopsy revealed she had been brutally beaten, sexually assaulted, and strangled with her own stockings. Initially, her body was thought to be that of another missing girl, but dental records confirmed her identity the day after she was found. The investigation into her murder was hampered by conflicting accounts of her last known whereabouts, with some friends saying she left a party to buy cigarettes and others providing different locations.
The case remained unsolved for a time, causing great frustration for Aime's family, who felt the initial investigation was mishandled. Investigators eventually linked her death to a string of other disappearances and murders of young women in the area. The perpetrator was later identified as the notorious serial killer Ted Bundy. After his final capture in Florida in 1978, Bundy confessed to the rape and murder of Laura Aime. He also disturbingly described performing post-mortem rituals with her body, which included washing her hair and applying makeup. Although Bundy confessed to over 30 murders before his execution, the exact details of his encounter with Aime on that Halloween night remain known only to him. The medical examiner estimated that Aime had only been dead for about a week when her body was found, suggesting Bundy may have held her captive for a period after her abduction.
