The man responsible for her murder was Melvin Shawn Rowland, a 37-year-old convicted sex offender on parole, with whom she had been in a brief relationship.
Their relationship began after they met at a local bar where Rowland worked as a bouncer. He had deceived McCluskey about his name, age, and criminal history. When she discovered the truth, she ended the relationship on October 9, 2018.
In the weeks that followed, McCluskey endured a campaign of harassment and extortion from Rowland. He and his friends sent her messages, including some that falsely claimed he was dead and that it was her fault. Rowland also demanded money from her, threatening to release compromising photos of her if she did not comply. Fearing for her reputation, she sent him $1,000. During this time, McCluskey and her parents made multiple reports to the University of Utah campus police, detailing Rowland's threatening behavior. Despite her repeated attempts to seek protection, her case was not given the urgency it required. A formal investigation into her extortion claims was delayed, and a critical opportunity to take Rowland into custody for violating his parole was missed.
The night of her death, Rowland had been waiting for McCluskey at her residence hall. He confronted her in the parking lot as she was returning from a night class and speaking to her mother on the phone. Her mother heard her yell, "No, no, no!" before the line went silent. Rowland forced McCluskey into a car he had driven to campus and shot her multiple times. Her body was later discovered by police in the back of the vehicle.
After the murder, Rowland was picked up by a woman he had met on a dating site. They went to dinner and her home before she dropped him off. The woman later saw news reports about the shooting and contacted the police. In the early hours of October 23, 2018, as police closed in on him at a local church, Melvin Rowland died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An investigation into the University of Utah's handling of McCluskey's case revealed significant failures by the campus police department to protect her. In the wake of her death, a foundation was established in her name to promote campus safety, amateur athletics, and animal welfare.
