In the late afternoon of Thursday, February 19, 2026, a quiet street in the Cambridge Subdivision of La Place, Louisiana, became the scene of a sudden and violent end to two young lives. Inside a Toyota Camry, 17-year-old Gerard Garrett and 18-year-old Daniel Robles De Medina were involved in a deadly altercation that left both of them fatally wounded. The male teenagers were residents of St.
John the Baptist Parish and both had juvenile criminal histories.
The tragic events unfolded when Medina picked up Garrett just blocks from a home on Yorktowne Drive. Authorities believe the two were engaged in a drug transaction that went horribly wrong. A struggle ensued inside the moving vehicle, and in a devastating turn of events, both young men reportedly drew handguns and shot each other. The car, now without a driver in control, veered off the road and crashed into a nearby house, causing significant structural damage to the brick home. A resident was inside at the time of the crash but was thankfully uninjured.
When first responders from the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene around 2:30 p.m., they discovered both Garrett and Medina unresponsive in the bullet-riddled car. Garrett was in the passenger seat, and Medina was the driver. Both were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. Inside the vehicle, investigators recovered two handguns, which they believe were the weapons used in the shootout, along with narcotics and cash.
Based on the evidence collected from the car and an analysis of cell phone conversations between the two teenagers, the sheriff's office concluded that the shooting was the result of a dispute over an illegal narcotics deal. The investigation into the double homicide is ongoing, but the initial findings point to a fatal confrontation between the two occupants of the vehicle, with no other suspects being sought.
