On the evening of Thursday, February 19, 2026, in Thomaston, Georgia, 19-year-old Conner Welsey Walker, a Caucasian male, was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. at a residence on Wiley Street, where deputies found Walker in an outbuilding with a gunshot wound to the head. The weapon used was identified as an AR-15 style rifle that belonged to Walker. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Upson County Sheriff's investigators, with the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, promptly began interviewing witnesses and processing the scene for evidence. Their investigation revealed that Walker was in the outbuilding with two other individuals, one of whom was a 14-year-old male. According to the sheriff's office, the 14-year-old was handling the rifle when it discharged, striking Walker. It was reported that the teen was handling the weapon without first clearing the chamber.
In connection with the shooting, the 14-year-old male was taken into custody. He has since been referred to Juvenile Court on misdemeanor charges of Reckless Conduct and Involuntary Manslaughter. The third individual present at the scene witnessed the event and corroborated the series of events to law enforcement. The juvenile was scheduled for a hearing on Monday, February 23, and was to be held at a Regional Youth Detention Center pending the hearing.
Conner Walker was remembered by his grandmother as a "brilliant kid" and a "great man who will sorely be missed." His father was a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps who was killed in action during the Iraq War in 2007. A GoFundMe campaign was initiated to assist his family with funeral expenses.
