On the night of August 22, 2021, the community of Thomaston, Georgia, was shaken by the violent and tragic death of Marlon Smith. A 48-year-old African American male known affectionately as 'Wacky,' Smith was a respected funeral director and embalmer for Bentley's and Sons Funeral Homes. His life was cut short when he was fatally shot at the Handy Mart on Walker Street in what investigators determined to be a targeted attack.
