In the late hours of a Thursday evening on Hilton Head Island, a burst of gunfire shattered the night's tranquility, leading to a tragic discovery. Beaufort County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of shots fired on Lark Street around 11:30 p.m. on February 19, 2026. Upon their arrival, they found the bodies of two individuals, Catherine “Cassie” Warrington, a 50-year-old female, and David Duffey, 62, outside a residence.
Both had succumbed to gunshot wounds in what investigators would later describe as a devastating late-night domestic shooting.
The ensuing investigation quickly identified a suspect, who had fled the scene. Through the use of license plate reader technology, law enforcement was able to track the suspect's vehicle to a home on Promenade Street in the neighboring community of Bluffton. There, they found the suspect, identified as 52-year-old Dustin Linsley of Bluffton, had barricaded himself inside his residence, leading to a prolonged standoff with authorities that would last for several hours.
As negotiations with Linsley were underway, a 56-year-old woman who was also inside the home was able to exit safely and unharmed. The standoff ultimately came to a grim conclusion in the early hours of the following morning. After making entry into the residence, deputies discovered Linsley deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The coroner pronounced him dead at approximately 4:40 a.m.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has continued to investigate the circumstances that led to the violent deaths of Catherine Warrington and David Duffey. The community has been left to mourn the loss of the two victims as authorities work to piece together the events of that fatal night. The investigation into the double homicide and subsequent suicide is ongoing, with law enforcement urging anyone with information to come forward.
