In the late summer of 2025, the community of Denmark, South Carolina, was shaken by the tragic death of Stephanie Hicks, a 42-year-old woman. On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Hicks became a victim of gun violence in what law enforcement officials have described as a murder-suicide.
Authorities were called to a residence on Rice Avenue where they discovered two individuals deceased.
The Bamberg County Coroner's Office later identified the deceased as Stephanie Hicks and 43-year-old Terrence Chapman. Investigators determined that Chapman was the perpetrator, fatally shooting Hicks before taking his own life. As a result, no arrests were made in connection with Hicks's death.
Stephanie Hicks was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a graduate of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School. Her death left behind a grieving family and a community searching for answers in the wake of a senseless act of violence. Funeral services for Hicks were held in the days following her death, with a visitation at Carroll Mortuary in Bamberg and a funeral service at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Ehrhardt.
