In the late spring of 2012, a joyous park gathering in Buffalo, New York, turned into a scene of tragedy, forever altering the lives of a local family. Marquayle Lee, a 26-year-old male, was enjoying a picnic with family and friends at Martin Luther King Jr. Park on May 12th. The group was celebrating a birthday and the return of a friend who had been away. Their celebration was violently interrupted when a gunman opened fire on the crowd of over 100 people.
Lee was struck by a bullet and critically injured. He succumbed to his injuries three days later, on May 15, 2012. The shooting not only claimed Lee's life but also left four others wounded, two of whom sustained permanent injuries. One of the survivors was left a paraplegic, while another was blinded in one eye.
The senseless act of violence sent shockwaves through the community, not only for its brutality but also for its location—a park dedicated to the memory of a champion of non-violence. Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was gang-related. The gunman, identified as Tariq 'Reek' Brown, a member of the Bailey Boys gang, had mistaken the picnickers for rival gang members. Holding a pistol-grip assault rifle, he indiscriminately fired into the crowd, turning a peaceful celebration into a scene of chaos and bloodshed. The investigation into the shooting was part of a larger, intensive effort by local and federal law enforcement to dismantle the violent street gangs that had been terrorizing the city.
In the months following the shooting, the investigation progressed, and in April 2013, Tariq Brown was federally charged with the murder of Marquayle Lee and the wounding of the four other victims. The charges against him were part of a broader racketeering indictment against the Bailey Boys gang. The case against Brown and his fellow gang members highlighted the destructive impact of gang warfare on the community, where innocent bystanders often become the unintended victims.
In August 2016, Tariq Brown pleaded guilty to a charge of RICO conspiracy for his role in the deadly shooting. In December of that same year, the now 23-year-old was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for his crimes. The sentencing brought a measure of closure to the families of the victims and marked a significant victory for law enforcement in their ongoing battle against gang violence in the city of Buffalo. While justice was served, the tragic death of Marquayle Lee remains a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gang activity and the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
