On a cold January afternoon in 2017, the life of Paul J. Byrd, a 46-year-old Black man from Buffalo, New York, was tragically cut short. On January 9th, at approximately 4 o'clock, Byrd was seated in the driver's seat of a vehicle on Cornwall Avenue when he was ambushed. An unknown individual, or perhaps several, opened fire on his car, striking him multiple times. Despite the immediate response of emergency services, Byrd succumbed to his injuries later that day.
The shooting, which occurred in the city's Grider-Delavan neighborhood, left the community shaken and searching for answers.
In the months that followed, the Buffalo Police Department actively investigated the homicide. By August of that year, authorities announced that they had "very strong leads" in the case, suggesting they were making progress in identifying those responsible for Byrd's death. To encourage witnesses to come forward with crucial information, a reward was offered. Initially set at $2,500 through the combined efforts of the Buffalo Police and Crime Stoppers, the reward was later increased to $7,500 thanks to contributions from anonymous citizens.
