On a Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina, the life of 23-year-old Serenity Zy’Ir Tate was tragically cut short. On January 24, 2026, events unfolded that would lead to her untimely death and a subsequent homicide investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Around 1:30 p.m., Tate arrived at a local hospital with a life-threatening injury. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into her death began to focus on the area of Whistling Teal Drive, located off Ridge Road near the interchange of I-85 and I-485. Homicide detectives worked to piece together the circumstances that led to her fatal injury. Their investigation quickly pointed toward a suspect.
As a result of their work, detectives identified 26-year-old Demontrez Breelove as a person of interest in the case. Breelove was brought in for questioning at the Law Enforcement Center. Following the interview, he was arrested and charged with the murder of Serenity Tate. He was then transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail. The investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities continue to gather information about the incident.
