Sergeant Ralph M. Galdi, aged 45, was a dedicated officer with the Philadelphia Police Department's Sex Crimes Unit. On March 31, 1986, while returning from court, he and his partner observed a vehicle running a red light and striking another vehicle. The suspect attempted to flee the scene, leading to a foot pursuit.
