In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 24, 2026, the life of 32-year-old Kennija Ware was tragically cut short in Lynchburg, Virginia. A resident of the city, he was fatally shot in the 700 block of Jackson Street. The Lynchburg Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the area at approximately 2:27 a.m. With the assistance of his family members, officers located Kennija, who was seriously injured. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Authorities have stated that the investigation into his death is in its early stages and is being treated as a homicide. Preliminary information suggests that the shooting was a targeted incident, and police have indicated that they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community. As of now, no arrests have been made, and officials have not publicly identified any suspects in connection with the shooting. Kennija was born in Lynchburg on January 5, 1994, to his parents Kenneth Ware, Sr. and Rena Calloway. He was a graduate of Heritage High School, where his passion for football blossomed, creating lasting friendships and cherished memories. He continued his education at Ferrum College. He was a father to his beloved son, Nasiah Fleshman. Kennija was also a brother to Kenneth Ware Jr. and was a cherished member of a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was known for his love of travel and sightseeing and found joy in spending time with his family and friends. Having accepted Christ at a young age, he was a member of the Prayer of Faith Church. His death has left his family and the Lynchburg community in mourning as they await answers in his untimely passing.
