On the evening of January 28, 2026, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Pasadena neighborhood, leaving a local man fatally wounded. The victim was identified as Jose Garcia, a 42-year-old Hispanic male. The incident unfolded at approximately 7:00 p.m. in the 300 block of Ashtabula Street.
According to police reports, Garcia was a passenger in a minivan that had stopped alongside a group of men on the street.
Following a brief interaction, one of the men produced a handgun and fired about 13 rounds into the vehicle. Garcia was struck by the gunfire. In the chaotic moments that followed, all parties fled the scene. The driver of the minivan transported Garcia to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Pasadena Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Unit quickly launched an investigation. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, 28-year-old Everett Johnson. The day after the shooting, detectives located and arrested Johnson in Pasadena without incident. A firearm was also recovered at the time of his arrest.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office has since filed multiple charges against Johnson, including murder, assault with a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon. His bail has been set at $3 million.
