On the morning of December 31, 2025, a quiet Concord, California neighborhood was disturbed by a family disturbance that ended in tragedy. Inside their home on Walnut Avenue, 90-year-old William L. Richardson and his 85-year-old wife, Joyce, were found shot to death. The male victim, William, was discovered by police who were responding to a call from his wife around 7 a.m. Officers heard gunfire as they arrived at the residence.

The sole suspect in the double homicide was the couple's 61-year-old son, Kirk Richardson, who was found at the home and taken into custody. He was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of murder with enhancements for the use of a firearm. According to authorities, Kirk Richardson confessed to the killings, stating that he had contemplated murdering his parents for decades. This tragic event was preceded by a history of domestic turmoil, with reports indicating that his mother had accused him of domestic violence as far back as 1989. Additionally, a neighbor had previously sought a restraining order against him due to violent threats.

Following his arrest, Kirk Richardson was held on $4 million bail. However, the case took another unexpected turn when the suspect died while in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility. Reports from the Contra Costa County Sheriff's office stated that Kirk Richardson was found unconscious in his cell after apparently intentionally striking his head against a wall. He had received medical treatment for self-inflicted injuries earlier that day and was medically cleared to return to jail before being found unresponsive that evening. His death prompted a separate investigation by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.
