In the afternoon of January 8, 2026, tragedy struck in Kansas City, Missouri, when 15-year-old Lucas Long was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. in the 6600 block of Monroe Avenue, at an apartment complex situated near Swope Park. When Kansas City Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they were directed to a rear parking lot where they discovered Long suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response from paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the location.
Remembered by his mother, Qu'Sha Barbee, as a goofy, hardworking, and protective young man, Lucas was a student at Southeast High School. There, he was known for his involvement in basketball and as a percussionist in the school's orchestra. He was also an active member of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God church. Long was known for his willingness to help others, often taking on construction, roofing, and landscaping jobs, learning many skills from his grandfather and his late father. His caring nature was often demonstrated by his insistence on ensuring his friends got home safely, even if it meant getting himself into trouble for being out past curfew.
The preliminary investigation by police suggests that Long had an interaction with several other individuals that escalated to gunfire. Following the shooting, unidentified men were reported to have fled the scene in a vehicle. As of the days following the incident, the Kansas City Police Department had not publicly identified any suspects, and no arrests had been made. Detectives were continuing to seek out witnesses and gather more information regarding the circumstances that led to the teenager's death. The investigation remains ongoing.
