On the late evening of June 17, 2017, a sense of normalcy filled the air at the intersection of 80th and Troost Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Inside a convenience store, 26-year-old Craig Barksdale was seen on surveillance footage, appearing to be in good spirits. He was captured chatting and laughing with women in a white car and other passersby, enjoying what seemed to be a typical Saturday night. Less than an hour after these friendly exchanges, however, the night took a tragic turn.
At approximately 11:15 p.m., police responded to a call about a shooting in the 8000 block of Troost Avenue. Arriving officers discovered Barksdale's body; he had been fatally shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Craig Barksdale's death was immediately launched as a homicide, but progress was hampered by a lack of forthcoming information. Detectives found themselves at a standstill, despite the fact that the shooting had occurred at a relatively busy intersection where numerous people were present. The reluctance of witnesses to come forward proved to be a significant obstacle for law enforcement officials trying to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. In the months that followed, the case grew cold, leaving a family grappling with unanswered questions and the pain of their loss.
In an effort to generate new leads, the Kansas City Police Department released the surveillance video from the convenience store in October 2017, nearly four months after the incident. The footage showed Barksdale’s final moments, and police clarified that the individuals seen interacting with him were not considered suspects. Instead, investigators hoped that these individuals might hold key information about Barksdale’s state of mind or any conversations that could provide context for what happened next. Barksdale's father joined police in a public plea, describing his son as a "fun to be around" and "handsome guy," and he spoke of the haunting dreams he had about his son's final moments. Shortly after the video's release, the driver of the white car seen in the footage did make contact with detectives.
Despite this development and the emotional appeals from Barksdale's family, including his mother who, with the support of KC Mothers in Charge, held a gathering to honor her son's life, the investigation has not yielded any publicly announced arrests or suspects. The authorities continued to urge anyone with information to come forward, highlighting the pervasive issue of fear that often prevents witnesses from cooperating in violent crime investigations. To date, the case remains unsolved, and the search for justice for Craig Barksdale continues.
