In the early hours of January 9, 2026, a burst of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn quiet in Wilmington's Southbridge neighborhood, leaving a young man's life tragically cut short. Melvin Njungwa, a 19-year-old male, was found by Wilmington Police officers in the 200 block of South Claymont Street at approximately 3:31 a.m. suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, marking the city's first homicide of the new year.
