In the heart of winter, on the morning of Friday, January 9, 2026, a burst of violence shattered the calm in west Decatur, Illinois, leaving a young man's life extinguished. Cornelius S. Smith, a 27-year-old man, was shot and killed before 11 a.m. near the 1100 block of West Marietta Street. When Decatur Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Smith suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
