John Michael Betscher, a 63-year-old man from Decatur, Illinois, was tragically found dead on November 14, 2020. He was the owner and operator of JB's North, a liquor and convenience store on North Calhoun Street in Decatur. Betscher died from multiple gunshot wounds to the neck, left shoulder, and back. The Macon County Coroner confirmed that his death was a result of these injuries.
Following Betscher's death, an investigation was launched by the Decatur Police Department. On February 19, 2021, 23-year-old Dangelo D. Foster was arrested and charged with Betscher's murder. Foster was accused of shooting Betscher during a robbery at JB's North. According to police reports, Foster allegedly pulled up to the drive-thru window of the store and fired several shots, hitting Betscher multiple times. Foster was taken into custody at the Macon County Courthouse on an unrelated matter and was subsequently arrested for Betscher's murder.
However, on August 16, 2022, the murder charges against Foster were dismissed without prejudice. This means that while the charges were dropped, the state has the option to refile them at a later date if they choose to do so. Foster did plead guilty to aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer, a Class 4 felony, and was sentenced for that offense.
The case remains under investigation, and the Decatur Police Department continues to seek justice for John Michael Betscher. The community and Betscher's family are still seeking closure and answers regarding the circumstances of his death.
