Demesheo Martez Lovelace, a 36-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on July 2, 2017, in Decatur, Illinois. Lovelace, affectionately known as "Pooder," was born on December 16, 1980, and was a beloved member of his community. He attended MacArthur High School and was known for his love of family, friends, and sports, particularly basketball and football. Lovelace's untimely death was the result of a fatal shooting that occurred near the 900 block of South Main Street in Decatur.
The investigation into Lovelace's death led to the arrest of three suspects: brothers Joseph and Darrelle Fox, and Shawn Eubanks. All three men were charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. The Decatur police, along with the U.S. Marshals Service, apprehended the suspects on July 9, 2017. The authorities also investigated a fire at a home near King and Pine, which was believed to be related to the shooting, as one of the suspects may have resided there.
In May 2019, Darrelle Fox was tried by a jury alongside his brother Joseph Fox. Both were charged with Lovelace's murder. The jury found Darrelle Fox guilty of first-degree murder, determining that he had personally discharged a firearm, causing Lovelace's death. Consequently, Darrelle Fox was sentenced to 60 years in prison in October 2019. The trial included various legal arguments, such as the admissibility of cell phone records and claims of conflict of interest involving the defense counsel.
The case against the suspects highlighted the complexities of the legal system and the thoroughness of the investigation.
