Ernest Lee Wren Jr., a 30-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on October 25, 2019, in Decatur, Illinois. Born on August 29, 1989, in Peoria, Illinois, Ernest was known for his loving nature and deep affection for his children and family. He was last employed at Bernardi’s Pub in Dunlap, Illinois, and had accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age in Flint, Michigan. Ernest leaves behind his parents, Mary Ann Wright of Decatur, IL, and Ernest Lee Wren Sr. of Peoria, IL, as well as his daughter, Ka’Leah Yates Wren, and four sons, Gavin Wren, Tariq Wren, Kylan Wren, and Kyran Wren, all of Peoria, IL.
On the morning of October 25, 2019, Ernest Lee Wren Jr. was found dead at the scene of a shooting in the 900 block of N. Van Dyke, Decatur. The coroner confirmed that Ernest died from a gunshot wound. An autopsy was scheduled for the following day by the McLean County Coroner's Office, and an inquest was pending. During the same incident, another individual, a 26-year-old man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
The Decatur Police Department identified Deonta M. Merriweather as the suspect responsible for Ernest's death. Merriweather was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was held in the Macon County Jail as the investigation continued.
