Tyler James Caraway-Appleby, a 22-year-old White man from Milton, Florida, was killed during an early-morning gathering on January 10, 2026. Although some initial accounts listed him as 21, his obituary records his birth date as October 17, 2003, establishing that he was 22 when he died. Known to his loved ones as “Ty,” he had grown up in the Pensacola and Milton area, graduated from Santa Rosa Online Academy with the Class of 2022, and pursued his interest in customized vehicles by
establishing TCA Customs LLC in 2023.
The fatal encounter unfolded at approximately 2:50 a.m. inside a residence at 5545 Galahad Trail in Milton. Tyler was seated on an L-shaped living-room couch with several other people, including his friend Cameron Rayshaun Keys. Investigators reported that four people were visible in home-surveillance footage and that three of them were handling firearms. Tyler and Keys were both among those holding guns as the group socialized, drank and passed the early-morning hours together.
According to the arrest report, those handling the firearms were pointing them in unsafe directions and failing to observe basic safety precautions. Surveillance footage reportedly showed that the magazine well of the weapon held by Keys was initially empty. Keys then inserted a magazine and charged the firearm while its muzzle was pointed generally toward Tyler. Moments later, the weapon discharged, striking Tyler in the cheek.
The sudden gunshot transformed the gathering into chaos. The video reportedly showed Keys throwing his hands backward in apparent surprise, causing the firearm to fall behind the couch. People began screaming and rising from their seats as Tyler fell backward onto the couch. Keys was seen shaking both hands before moving out of the camera’s view. Emergency callers initially told dispatchers that a man may have accidentally shot himself in the mouth, but the surveillance recording and later investigation indicated that the gun had been in Keys’ possession when it fired.
Santa Rosa County sheriff’s deputies arrived and found Tyler lying on the floor near the living-room couch with the gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The homeowner provided investigators with Ring surveillance footage that had captured the shooting, giving the Major Crimes Unit a direct record of the group’s firearm handling and the moment Tyler was struck.
Detectives interviewed Keys later that morning at his girlfriend’s residence. Keys reportedly said that everyone had been drinking and having a good time, although he claimed he had stopped drinking approximately one hour and ten minutes before the shooting. He first told investigators that he had checked whether the firearm was loaded, but later acknowledged that he had not checked it completely. He said he remembered little beyond hearing the gunshot and realizing that he had struck his best friend. Keys maintained that the shooting had not been intentional.
Authorities arrested Cameron Rayshaun Keys in connection with Tyler’s death and charged him with negligent manslaughter. Early reports stated that he was initially held without bond at the Santa Rosa County Jail. He was subsequently released on January 12 after posting a $100,000 bond. A court appearance was scheduled for January 29, 2026.
