On January 1, 2023, officers
responded to a call reporting a possible deceased person at the residence. Upon arrival, they encountered a male subject at the front doorway, visibly distressed and on the phone, along with a white female standing nearby. Both individuals were escorted out of the house as officers proceeded to investigate the scene. Inside the residence, officers found another white female who directed them to the utility room where Davis's body was located. Witnesses present at the scene reported hearing four loud gunshots around 3:30 a.m., followed by three individuals, including the suspect, Cameron Vashawn Johnson, entering the house and ordering everyone to leave.
Cameron Vashawn Johnson, a 26-year-old man from Pensacola, was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Johnny Gene Davis. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force apprehended Johnson at a home on Florida Town Road in Pace. According to witness statements, Johnson was seen carrying a black "military-style rifle" and wearing all black clothing at the time of the incident. He allegedly entered the house, went down the hallway towards the back bedrooms, and fired the fatal shots that killed Davis.
