In the late-night hours of Saturday, January 17, 2026, the life of 26-year-old Elquan Tillman was tragically cut short on a street in his own Brooklyn neighborhood. Just a block from his home, Tillman was discovered by police lying face down next to scaffolding outside 134 Stockton St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Officers from the 79th Precinct had responded to a 911 call reporting a man shot shortly before 11 p.m.
Upon their arrival, they found Tillman with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and quickly transported Tillman to Kings County Hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators at the scene recovered at least nine shell casings, indicating the violence of the encounter that had taken place. The motive for the shooting remains unclear to authorities.
As of now, the New York Police Department has not made any arrests in connection with the fatal shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified or described.
