Family members, noting it was highly unlike her to not return home, reported her missing to the Independence Police Department early that morning.
As the investigation commenced, detectives received a troubling tip indicating that the teenager may have been shot in Independence, prompting an urgent search that extended into the neighboring jurisdiction of Kansas City.
The search ended in tragedy the following day, Saturday, November 29, when authorities located Elayjah's body in a wooded area near 87th Street and Blue River Road in South Kansas City. Law enforcement classified the case as a homicide, confirming the fears raised by the earlier tip. She was remembered by her community and former teachers at William Chrisman High School as a vibrant scholar and athlete who played volleyball and basketball, possessing a captivating personality and a smile that lit up the room. Her sudden death left her family, including her mother and grandmother, grappling with the loss of a young woman who had aspirations of buying a home and traveling the world.
As of early December 2025, investigators had identified 28-year-old Eric Phillips II as a suspect in connection with the homicide. Police released descriptions of Phillips and appealed to the public for assistance in locating him, warning that he was wanted for questioning regarding the death. Despite identifying a suspect, Elayjah's grandmother stated to the press that she did not believe her granddaughter and Phillips knew each other previously.
