On the evening of Friday, December 5, 2025, a violent incident occurred in the Hartwell neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio, resulting in the death of Johnie Deontae Thomas, a 27-year-old male. Cincinnati Police Department officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of Ferndale Avenue around 8:00 p.m. following reports of gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, first responders located the victim suffering from gunshot wounds.
Thomas was treated at the scene by emergency personnel before being
transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for urgent care. Despite the life-saving measures attempted by medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Hamilton County Coroner’s Office subsequently ruled the death a homicide, marking another tragic loss for the community in late 2025.
As of the most recent updates regarding the investigation, law enforcement officials stated that no suspects were in custody. No arrests had been made immediately following the shooting, and detectives from the homicide unit continued to canvass the area and seek information from the public to determine a motive and identify the person or persons responsible.
Thomas, who was known to friends and family by the nickname "5 Mundo" and described in tributes as an aspiring rapper, was memorialized by his community in the weeks following the shooting. Funeral arrangements were handled by J.C. Battle and Sons Funeral Home, with a visitation service scheduled later in the month to allow loved ones to pay their final respects.
