In the early morning hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, a violent incident unfolded in the 300 block of Buckbee Street in Rockford, Illinois. Officers from the Rockford Police Department were dispatched to the scene around 1:15 a.m. after ShotSpotter technology detected gunfire in the area near Blackhawk Courts. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a male victim lying on the roadway suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.
The injured man was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment, but despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The Winnebago County Coroner's Office subsequently identified the deceased as 35-year-old Tarrie Cortez Noel. A resident of Rockford, Noel was remembered by his community as a dedicated father to eight children. His passing left a significant void in the lives of his large family, including his parents, siblings, and young children, one of whom was reportedly undergoing medical treatment for a serious condition at the time of his father's death. As investigators processed the crime scene, they worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting on that cold December morning.
Police investigations quickly led to the identification of a suspect in connection with the homicide. Authorities arrested 25-year-old Leavantre Vaughn, also a resident of Rockford, linking him to the shooting death of Noel. Following his apprehension, the Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the case, and Vaughn was charged with four counts of first-degree murder. He was subsequently booked into the Winnebago County Jail, where he remained in custody awaiting further legal proceedings as the case moved through the judicial system.
