Malcom Coperning, 35, a Black man, was killed late on Friday, December 12, 2025, after gunfire erupted inside an apartment in Newark’s South Ward. Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Wainwright Street at about 9:58 p.m., where officers found Coperning suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside the residence.
First responders moved quickly, rushing Coperning to University Hospital as the minutes slipped by. Despite lifesaving efforts, Coperning was pronounced dead at 10:37 p.m
