On the evening of December 14, 2025, deputies with the Wyandot County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a home on Township Highway 43 in the village of Nevada after a 911 call reported a domestic disturbance. Minutes later, a second call came in from the same address, this time warning that threats of violence were being made against a family member.
When deputies arrived, they secured a male at the scene and began searching the residence, moving room to room as the urgency of the calls hung in the air.
Inside the home, they found Stephen G. Mitten, a 70-year-old man, dead from apparent gunshot wounds. The scene quickly turned into a major investigation: detectives from the Wyandot County Major Crimes Unit responded, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was brought in to help process evidence and document what had happened inside the house. Assistant Wyandot County Coroner Michael O'Reilly came to the residence and ordered an autopsy, and Mitten's body was transported to the Lucas County Coroner's Office for examination as investigators worked to reconstruct the final moments that led to the shooting.
Authorities soon announced an arrest. Jason G. Mitten, 48, of Nevada, was booked into the Wyandot County Jail and charged with one count of murder. In the days that followed, the case moved from a tense, chaotic callout to the beginning of court proceedings: Jason Mitten appeared for a preliminary hearing, where a judge set bond at $3 million and scheduled him to return to court on December 22, 2025. Even with an arrest made, officials described the matter as an active investigation, with detectives and prosecutors continuing to gather facts and test the story the evidence was telling.
