Nagongi Cann, a 48-year-old man from Springfield, OH, tragically lost his life on September 16, 2022. He was shot in the hip while inside a vehicle at the Fuel America gas station on Selma Road. Despite being airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident was reportedly the result of an ongoing argument between Cann and Malik Shaw, 30, who was later arrested and charged with murder. Shaw was accused of seeking out Cann to confront him over a rumor.
Shaw's ex-wife, Peggy Jo Shaw, 45, was also arrested and charged with felonious assault and tampering with evidence. She later pleaded guilty to felonious assault and agreed to testify against her ex-husband in exchange for having the murder charge dropped.
Malik Shaw was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 21 years. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in Springfield, which has seen a rise in such incidents over recent years.
