The rural community of Lenox in Dyer County, Tennessee, was the scene of a violent domestic tragedy on the morning of December 18, 2025, that resulted in the death of 60-year-old male William John Lydon Jr. Deputies from the Dyer County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence on Tar Hill Road following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered William deceased inside the home, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds while he was sleeping.
In the same dwelling, the couple's 24-year-old son was found with critical gunshot injuries and was immediately airlifted to a regional trauma center for emergency medical treatment.
Investigators quickly determined that the primary suspect was the victim's wife, Sherry Darlene Lydon. After the shootings occurred, she fled the scene in a Dodge Charger before authorities arrived. The sequence of events concluded on Interstate 155, where the suspect drove the vehicle in the wrong direction, ultimately colliding head-on with an 18-wheeler. The driver of the truck was unharmed, but Sherry sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash, which officials described as an apparent suicide attempt. She was transported to a hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries, bringing the immediate violence to an end without an arrest or trial.
Sheriff Jeff Box provided context regarding the investigation, noting that the suspect had recently undergone surgery and had been experiencing significant mental health challenges, including night terrors, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.
